Employee Engagement, it’s not Work Engagement

An interesting part of HR Brand Selling for current employees is employee engagement.


My definition of it is a multidimensional culturally moderated concept that encompasses the extent to which employees feel connected to, involved in and enthusiastic and passionate about their work thereby creating a desire to invest emotional, cognitive, physical and/or behavioural energy to their work-related roles for the purpose of contributing to their own goals and the organisation in a positive way (Burgess, 2022).

Please note, that work engagement is different, as it’s considered as the opposite of burnout.


An employee can be totally work engaged, due to their professionalism, but have total employee disengagement with their employer. Once this happens the employee will be looking for the door, but under their own terms. It is important for any employer to address employee engagement, regardless of how hard this may or may not be.
