The Rise of Digital Marketing

All business should at least be looking at but hopefully using digital channels as a way to generate leads and convert interest into customers. Digital marketing allows brands to target a more specific and niche audience instantly compared to the traditional marketing campaign’s broader and slower approach.
Digital Marketing is continuously evolving as technology, platforms and marketing techniques change. It involves strategic and practical skills such as search engine optimisation (SEO), social media and creating effective websites.
Digital Marketing interactions with customers involve Digital: devices, platforms, media, data and technology. During the 1990s, digital marketing effectively began, at the same time as my marketing career. It was during this time that multinational corporations started to realise the importance of using the increasing storage capacity of computers to collect customers’ information (database marketing) enabling them to market their products and services, this led to the increase of customer loyalty programs.
Since those times, digital marketing has become much more sophisticated and will continue to become even more so over time. The challenges will be consumer privacy and data protection, which has been in the news recently due to some organisations having their customers’ data stolen by hackers. What I can see occurring is that governments will introduce enforced legislation that will enable customers to either being entitled to have all their information removed off organisations’ (or 3rd parties) databases or there will be actual time limits on keeping customer records before their prescribed removal from these databases.
It is important to integrate digital marketing with traditional marketing communications to achieve the overall marketing objectives of the organisation. Digital marketing focuses on managing different forms of the company’s electronic presence, such as company websites, apps and social media company pages.
